Text Box: TRANS FATS: Banned, and for Good Reason

Are they as bad as they seem?
                      The simple answer is yes.

Trans fats are vegetable fats that have been altered during a special heating process (called hydrogenation) and are solid at room temperature (think stick margarine and shortening). Most of the trans fats in the American diet come from pre-packaged baked goods, processed foods, and commercially fried foods such as French fries. They raise LDL or “bad” cholesterol in the blood, and lower HDL or “good” cholesterol. Other effects on the blood vessels lead to increased risk of heart
disease and diabetes.
The Institute of Medicine has concluded that no amount of Trans Fats in the diet is safe. Check the
nutrition label on all food products and if it has more than zero grams of trans fat, pick another product.  Other
ingredients to beware of are “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” and “vegetable shortening”.
