This seems to be one of those weeks that offer a glut of sports activities. Topping the list for most people is the Super Bowl.

The annual NFL Championship game will be played Sunday at Detroit. Game time is 6:30 in the evening. The Pittsburgh Steelers will meet the Seattle Seahawks.

The preceding paragraph is offered for the benefit of those who have been isolated in a cave for the past two weeks.

Having the Steelers in the Super Bowl, for me, is almost as good as having the Cleveland Browns playing. However, we know that is a dream that is some years away.

There is also some extra interest in this area for the 2006 edition of the NFL's title game. One reason is the presence of Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback for the Steelers. Again, for those just getting out of that cave, Roethlisberger is a native of Findlay, which makes him almost a local boy.

In addition, his quarterbacking skills, most importantly, his passing ability, has given the Steelers the extra dimension that has done a lot for their success this season.

Another reason for this to be a "special" Super Bowl in this area is the likelihood that wide receiver Nate Washington will get a chance to play. Washington, who is from Toledo, played his college football for the Tiffin University Dragons.

If you watched the Steeler's Conference title win over the Denver Broncos, you had to enjoy seeing Washington catch an important pass in an early Pittsburgh drive and then seeing the graphic that included his photo and college info.

It should be a lot of fun.

After the Super Bowl passes into history this weekend, we can get seriously interested in the Winter Olympics. The Olympics open next weekend in Turin, Italy. The two week sports extravaganza always produces some great moments … some genuine, some contrived by the media, but always interesting.

In the meantime, the racing season, which just ended a couple of months ago with the conclusion of the NASCAR season, has gotten underway again.

The racing action currently is limited to Daytona, Florida, where the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona was held last weekend. Things continue there all focused at NASCAR's 500 miler, coming in two weeks.

In the meantime, events will feature IROC, ARCA and Busch series events.

Last weekend, at the Rolex 24, a true "local boy" took part. Zach Arnold, who lives in and runs his racing team from, Tiffin, drove his ASC Motorsports Corvette in the twice-around-the-clock event.

Starting 66th, Arnold and his team finished 60th. They were part of what is called the GT class, which is for cars that theoretically could be driven on the road, carrying the driver and a passenger. Their 'Vette completed 103 laps of the three and a half mile, 14-turn Daytona road course.

The ASC Motorsports driver lineup for the 2006 endurance race included Johnny Miller of Richmond, VA, Eric Koselke of Avon, IN, Jay Poscento of Calgary, AB and Mark Montgomery of Daytona Beach, FL.

Here in Tiffin, Columbian High School will host the Northern Ohio League wrestling championships next Saturday. The action will get underway at 11 in the morning.

These are the times that make you glad you've got a remote.
