I don’t know about you, but as a fan of the Cleveland Browns, I’ve about had it. I’ll admit to being a fair weather fan of most other teams I support when they’re winning … Lions, Tigers, Indians, Buckeyes. But I root for the Browns no matter their record, no matter who they’re playing.
And I know there are a lot of you out there who do the same. I also know there are some who don’t feel that way at all, couldn’t care less about the Browns, or are rabid about your own favorite team. That’s OK, just bear with us while we have our own pity-party.
Last Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Cleveland was embarrassing. Passes dropped, penalties committed, interceptions thrown … after the Browns’ second play of the game, on which they scored, they looked like 22 guys who got together that morning and dressed up like a football team.
Pitiful. We, as Browns Fans, deserve better. We’ve been waiting long enough.
We waited through the Modell years, when a Defense minded owner hired Defense minded coaches for Offensively talented players. We waited through the years The Browns floated in limbo, not really existing anywhere but not gone either. We waited through the years when What’s his name? Was coach. And we’ve waited a couple of years now on Butch Davis, the supposed miracle worker from Miami.
We don’t see any improvement. It’s not getting better.
Now, they say that feelings of entitlement are not good. They can lead to a life of crime.
But doggone it. There comes a time when, if loyalty is all we’ve got to offer, and we give it, it should be rewarded.
Why shouldn’t those who offer their loyalty eventually get something they want in return? Why shouldn’t the organization they support give them a team of which they can be proud, a team that plays well game after game?
We’ve got a right!
Welllll … no … I guess we don’t. We no more earn the right to a winning team by supporting it than we earn the right to success by working hard. There are things that seem like they should be, but they aren’t, quos that should come from quid, but don’t.
Sometimes you do everything right and still fail.
And it’s still no reason to not try to do everything right.
But they still were pitiful last Sunday.
