The high school basketball tournaments get underway next week with the opening of the girls’ playoffs. On Tuesday, Columbian meets Shelby in Division II sectional play at Willard. The winner takes on top-seeded Bellevue next Saturday, February 22nd.

Also on Tuesday, in Division III, Mohawk goes against Colonel Crawford in the early game at Shelby. The winner meets second-seeded Ashland Crestview next Saturday.

In Division IV action at Old Fort, Hopewell-Loudon and Bettsville play at 6:30 PM and the second game pits Calvert and Danbury. The winner of the HL-Bettsville matchup faces top seeded New Riegel in the early game on Saturday. The Calvert-Danbury winner goes against second-seeded Fremont St. Joseph in the late game Saturday.

Norwalk hosts a Division IV sectional where Old Fort will meet South Central in the early game Tuesday with the winner meeting top seeded Norwalk St. Paul in the early game the following Saturday.

Boys’ tournament basketball starts the following week. The Division IV sectional at Hopewell-Loudon will see Old Fort and Mohawk meet in the early game and New Riegel and Bettsville in the late game on the 25th. On the 28th, top-seeded Calvert plays the OF-Mohawk winner and Fremont St. Joseph, the second seed plays NR or Bettsville.

The Fostoria sectional in Division IV has Hopewell-Loudon as the second seed. The second game on the 25th features St. Wendelin and Arcadia, with the winner taking on HL in the second game on the 28th.

Seneca East is in the Port Clinton sectional and plays South Central on the 25th with the winner meeting second seeded Norwalk St. Paul on the 28th.

Some of the best memories I have of the years I broadcast high school sports on WTTF are of the high school tournaments.

It’s a situation where each team virtually starts over the season. You win, you play again … you lose, you go home.

Most times, the team which had a better regular season record won, but there was always the chance of an upset. Often enough, a team with an impressive regular season would get caught looking past an opponent with only a few W’s and things get very interesting, indeed.
