Arbor Day 2000
On Saturday, April 29th, the Tiffin Shade Tree and Beautification Commission plans to have a series of events at Hedges Boyer Park in celebration of Arbor Day in Tiffin. All events will take place near the Kiddy Corral on the upper level.
The program will begin at 10:00 AM with opening ceremonies including a welcome by the Commission, the Park Board and Mayor Hohman. Proper planting procedures will be demonstrated with four large green ash trees that were dug from our city nursery at the Water Pollution Control Center, and will be planted in the Kiddy Corral area. These in time will provide wonderful shade in that area. The trees will be so placed so as not to interfere with the new equipment to be installed. Three flowering trees will be planted on the brow of the hill near the corral overlooking the lower level. They should present a nice show from the Summit Street entrance to the park.
The morning will include tree and wild flower walks led by Commission members. Also included in the morning program will be a demonstration on how to safely climb trees. Lowell Hetzel, our city arborist, and his crew will have equipment and the know-how to show interested people the proper procedure.
At approximately 12:00 noon, a free lunch of hot dogs with trimmings, and drinks will be served by the commission members and other volunteer workers. All are welcome.
The program will then conclude with Lowell Hetzel demonstrating proper pruning techniques. Commission members may get involved.
It will be a family fun time should the weather cooperate. Food will be served in the nearby shelter.
On April 26, Mayor Hohman, City Director Wayne Stephens, Wilma Klopp, representing the City Council, and the Commission members will travel to Sylvania to accept the award for the Tree City USA. This will be Tiffin’s 19th straight year to be included. Only Bowling Green and Toledo in northwest Ohio have 20 consecutive years.
The Tiffin Tree and Beautification Committee’s goal for 2000 is to plant 300 trees along city streets and in the parks. Some of these trees will come from our own city nursery and will be planted by the city crew. If readers are interested in having a tree planted along the street adjacent to their property, they should call the city garage or Percy Lilly of the Commission at 447-2896. There is no cost to the landowner.
The budget of the Commission also includes the beautification of the city signs, parking areas and other special areas. The support of Garden Clubs and others are deeply appreciated. All citizens are invited to send in ideas for beautification.
With the completion of the Fort Ball project and the potential of a new park next to the parking area being developed across the river from the Kiwanis Manor, the promise is to be a Garden City, USA. Tiffin is flowering for the new millennium.
